Sucker!

As anyone who has spent any amount of time around Malcolm will know he really enjoys sucking as a way to soothe himself, calm down, and eventually fall asleep. As a newborn I was nervous about using a pacifier too early and causing the infamous 'confusion' so Ashley and I compromised using our fingers instead, and spending time showing Malcolm that he had a thumb too. It was quite the sight to see Malcolm sitting on my lap sucking MY thumb as he had not found his own yet. I think we are just about the only parents that were trying to get our child to suck his thumb (or fingers).
One month old sucking on my pinky finger

When Malcolm hit about one month old I broke down and bought a few different styles of pacifiers for him to try out. Although he seemed to like it, Malcolm could never keep them in his mouth for more than a few sucks. I gave up on the pacifiers and resigned myself to keeping my fingers very clean, short fingernails, and wet pruny finger tips.

Fast forward to two weeks ago when during a 3am feeding I got to thinking. Malcolm is quite happy to suck on my rather large thumb, and he doesn't mind the rubber of the pacifier maybe the 0-6 month size is just too small for him? At the next trip to the grocery store I picked up the 7-12 month size and we haven't looked back since! I'm a happy mama!
